Jamaica

Come to Jamaica and feel all right!

About Jamaica:  Positioned 90 miles south of Cuba, Jamaica offers a wide variety of relaxing and thrilling activities, and the island's sandy white beaches, rushing rivers and sensuous waterfalls are sure to leave a lasting impression.  As the birthplace of reggae, you can dance the night away to the island tunes.  Or, for the sport enthusiast, Jamaica provides a variety of sports ranging from golfing on any of the island's 12 championship golf courses to an assortment of water sports.  As one of the largest Caribbean islands, there's more here than can be explored in just a few days.  Most traveler will want to relax in the north coast cities -- Ocho Rios, Montego Bay or Negril -- and soak in the scenery of the powdery sand, towering cliffs and thick tropical foliage.  Whether you choose to enjoy Jamaica's many fine bars and brands or plan on plundering the local shops, you're sure to bring back a little bit of the carefree and laid-back attitude of the natives.

Climate:  The average annual temperature is about 82°F (28°C), but that's a result of two extremes, Beachfront temps often climb into the 90°F (32°C) range during the summer, but up in the mountains it's cooler, often hovering around 70°F (21°C).  Rainfall is heavy in Jamaica, around 77 inches (196 cm) annually, and most plentiful during May, and from August - November.

Documents:  U.S. citizens need either a valid passport (or one that has not been expired for more than one year), or a photo I.D. with other proof of citizenship (birth certificate, voter's registration card).  All others need a valid passport.  All visitors must have an outgoing ticket for entry into Jamaica.

Currency:  Jamaica Dollar; US$1 = JAM$35; U.S. Dollars are widely accepted.

Electricity:  The wall outlets vary throughout Jamaica -- some are standard U.S. current 110 volts/60 AC, some European.

Taxes and Tipping:   The departure tax is US$15

Time:   Eastern Standard Time.

Languages:  English is the official language, but many Jamaicans speak in a native dialect that uses a British inflection and a tropical tempo.

Marriage Requirements:   Couple must apply for a license and arrive in Jamaica 24 hours prior to the ceremony.  A valid birth certificate is required, along with divorce or death certificates (if applicable).  Many hotels on the island offer wedding packages.
