Day 2: Thur. Beijing Sightsee imposing Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City’s Imperial Palace. A pedicab ride takes you through the Hutong district’s ancient narrow streets to enjoy a close-up look at the heritage of this exciting city, with a local family visit. Day 3: Fri. Beijing Today, create memories to last a lifetime as you walk along the ancient ramparts of the incredible Great Wall. This evening, enjoy Shabbat dinner and services. MEALS: American Breakfast, Lunch, Special Dinner |
Day 4: Sat. Beijing/Zhengzhou/
Kaifeng/Zhengzhou This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Zhengzhou, where you will continue on by motor coach to Kaifeng, a Northern Song Dynasty capital whose emperor invited Jews to stay and develop a cotton industry. A synagogue was first built in Kaifeng in 1183; it was rebuilt many times due to flooding of the Yellow River, and finally destroyed by an earthquake in the 1860’s. Driving through the center of Kaifeng, see the Dragon Palace, then visit the Jewish Quarter and meet a local Jewish descendant. Day 5: Sun. Zhengzhou/Xi’an After breakfast at the hotel, a motor coach drive takes you to historic Xian. Upon arrival this evening, enjoy a dinner. *Travel to Xian by train if the group is less than 6 tour members MEALS: American Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Grand New World Hotel |
Day 6: Mon. Xi’an View the extraordinary life-sized terra-cotta army, no two alike, buried for over 2200 years; Circle Vision Movie; Bronze Chariot; scenic Small Wild Goose Pagoda and the Xi’an History Museum. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy a spectacular dinner show at the Tang Dynasty Theatre. MEALS: American Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Show |
Day 7: Tues. Xi’an/Chongqing After your free morning, fly to Chongqing. Visit the Stilwell Museum and view World War II memorabilia before boarding Victoria Cruises ship to begin your memorable cruise. MEALS: American Breakfast, Dinner Victoria Cruise |
Day 8: Wed. Yangtze Cruise: Fengdu A shore excursion at Fengdu shows the unique temples at Mingshan Hill, filled with statues of ghosts and devils. * Alternate shore excursion may visit Shiboazhai or Wanzhou. MEALS: American Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Day 9: Thur. Yangtze River Cruise Three
Gorges/Small Three Gorges or Shennong
Stream Today cruise through the first of the Three Gorges,Qutang Gorge, hemmed by towering cliffs. Sail on throughWu Gorge, known for its loftyTwelve Peaks. AtWushan, travel up the Daning River via cruiser to see its Small Gorges. Continue by sampan to the picturesque minigorges of the Ma Du River with its clear water and unusual rock formations. Alternately, your excursion may be on Shennong Stream with its dramatic gorges. Pass through the last and most scenic of the major gorges,Xiling Gorge, and through theThree Gorges ship locks. Day 10: Fri. Yangtze Cruise: Xiling Gorge/San Dou Ping/Yichang/Shanghai At San Dou Ping, see the amazing Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric project. Continue on to Yichang where you board your flight to vibrant Shanghai. On arrival transfer to the hotel. Shabbat dinner tonight will be shared with members of the local Jewish Community Center. * If direct flight is not available, drive to Wuhan by motor coach then fly to Shanghai. Day 11: Sat. Shanghai Begin your tour today at the Peace Hotel, a Shanghai landmark. Victor Sasson, 4th generation of a wealthy Baghdad Jewish family, built the 1930’s-era hotel and was “the” place to stay in Shanghai. Sasson occupied the top floors under the green pyramid.Continue on to the Ohel Rachel Synagogue, built in 1920 by Victor’s Uncle David in memory of his beloved wife. The Ohel Moshe Synagogue was the center of an active Jewish community prior to World War II. European Jews fleeing Hitler’s Germany made Shanghai their home during the war. Visit Old Jewish Shanghai at the old Hongkou district where immigrants lived and the shops catered to the Jewish community. Finally, visit a Children’s Palace which provides a range of after-school and weekend programs including music, dance, art and photography. MEALS: American Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Day 12: Sun. Shanghai Sightsee Shanghai’s highlights: the Shanghai Museum, with an audio tour describing the special features of the museum’s permanent collections, Nanjing Road or Huai Hai Road shopping streets,Yu Garden and the Old Town, the city’s colonial European past at The Bund, the modern Xintiandi, and a renowned Shanghai silk factory.
