Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park sprawls over 377 square miles 30 miles south of Hilo. It's
a magnificent wonderland of massive calderas, vast expanses of lava,
pit craters, rain forests, steam vents, sulphur banks, lava tubes
and kipuka, oases of greenery and wildlife that have been miraculously
left untouched by molten rivers of lava.

at the visitor center.

Do and See
- Hike Volcano. Visitors
can explore 150 miles of trails, ranging from an easy 20-minutes
stroll on a paved path that measures less than half a miles to
strenuous four-day treks that cover more than 36 miles. Scenic
highlights include fern- and moss-draped Thurston Lava Tube; Devastation
Trail, a half-mile walk through a forest of skeletal ohia trees;
and Halemaumau Crater, which measures a half-mile wide and 1,000
feet deep.
- Volcano House.
Perched on the rim of Kilauea, one of the world's most active
volcanoes, Volcano Hous is Hawaii's oldest continually operated
hotel. There actually been three Volcanos Houses, which have hosted
many distinguished guests including Mark Twain; and presidents
Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon.
- Volcano Winery.
Three miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Winery
is the Big Island's only winery. The winery produces six wines
with a tropical flair. It is open 365 days a year and offers free
tastings of all of its wines.
Don't miss the night
viewing of red hot molten lava flow. Be sure to bring flash light,
camera & drinking water; dress in long pant and sneaker to walk
on lava rock.
